L’histoire du Lev commence en 1880, à la création de l’État bulgare. En 1947, la réforme monétaire d’après-guerre imposa la mise en circulation de billets en Nouveau Lev au ratio 1 pour 1 ; en 1952, nouvelle réforme (1 pour 100), puis une autre en 1962 (1 pour 10). Après une période d'inflation dans les années 1990, le Nouveau Lev a été indexé sur le Mark allemand. Le Lev est maintenant indexé sur l’Euro.
